Personality description
Will is very kind and caring when the opportunity to be so presents itself. However, he mostly remains isolated from those around him, but is not at all shy; Will is antisocial, not quick to socialize, and is noted to be on the autistic spectrum, somewhat close to Asperger's. At the core, he is at times witty and sarcastic, sassy, but is never with ill-intent unless he is forced to be.
Will is quiet, extremely empathetic and thus understanding, and while this makes him a very good and reliable companion, it also allows him a great deal of dangerous influence on those around him. He is extremely intelligent, especially in matters of criminal psychology and interpreting behaviors of those around him. This allows him to get a good read of those he interacts with, and thus allows him to reflect back intent, thought, and action.
Because of his intimate ability to empathize with even the most violent and wayward of personas, Will can be an excellent savior and friend on one hand, while also being the very one who viciously strikes you down. (And indeed Will has killed people in the past, be it with his bare hands or with a gun.) He is not innately dangerous and violent unless provoked, but his personality is such that he will go to great lengths to protect himself and those who inspire his protection. Above all else, he is loyal, determined, and understanding.

Empathy
Highly empathetic, he is able to understand and interpret the positions and thoughts and personalities of those around him, by internalizing micro-expressions and depth of spoken words. This is a blessing in the sense that he is able to accurately comprehend criminals and violent offenders of the law with ease, by using his detailed and open imagination to recreate crime scenes and get inside the mind of serial killers and the like. This is a curse in the sense that he cannot just “turn off” his high level of empathy whenever he would like, and thus is subject to overstimulation that manifests in nightmares, mood changes, mental illness, and a worsening factor in physical illnesses (including, once, encephalitis). Will is noted to place himself somewhere on the autism spectrum.
Intellect
He is extremely intelligent and has an impressive photographic memory. These traits come in handy particularly when he is analyzing a crime scene or trying to “read” someone. But they can quickly become a hindrance when he is trying to relax his mind or refocus his attention.
Physical strength
As he is in law enforcement, Will is very physically fit and capable. He is also well-trained in hand-to-hand combat. He runs and exercises regularly.

Will has been falsely imprisoned for the crimes of the Chesapeake Ripper. While an inmate at the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, he is forced by Dr. Chilton to undergo an experimental treatment meant to “subdue” his violent mind: a transorbital prefrontal lobotomy. It works, but perhaps too well… It suppresses Will’s thoughts and personality to grant him a “flat effect”, voids all of Will’s non-rote memory, fixes him up with anxiety and uncontrollable tics, and it seriously damages his eyesight. To the world, Dr. Chilton declares that Will Graham has tragically died while in custody…but in secret, Will’s lobotomized self is kept at the BSHCI for further research.
